Nick Caveand his Bad Seeds and Grinderman bandmate, Warren Ellis, have scored the upcoming contemporary western, Hell or High Water, starringJeff Bridges and Chris Pine.
Directed by David Mackenzie, Hell or High Water tells the story of Toby (Pine), a divorced father who plots a series of bank heists with his ex-con brother, Tanner (Ben Foster), in order to keep the familys house from foreclosure. Bridges, meanwhile, plays Marcus, a Texas Ranger trying to stop the brothers in the weeks before his retirement.
Hell or High Water premiered at Cannes and will hit theaters August 12th, the same day the soundtrack sees release via Milan Records. Excerpts from two of Cave and Ellis contributions are available to stream below, Comancheria and Mamas Room.
Both tracks have a brooding, orchestral feel vast soundscapes built from stretched, aching strings and the ominous plunk of a piano. Along with Cave and Ellis numerous contributions, the Hell or High Water soundtrack boasts a fitting array of outlaw country artists including Waylon Jennings, Townes Van Zandt and Chris Stapleton.
Cave and Ellis have collaborated on scores for manyfilmsover the years, including The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, The Roadand, most recently, the French film, Loin Des Hommes, which starred Viggo Mortensen.
Cave and the Bad Seeds willalsorelease their 16th studio album, Skeleton Tree, September 9th. The group will debut the entire album in a feature film called One More Time With Feeling, set to screen one night only on September 8th. The movie was directed by Andrew Dominik (who also did The Assassinationof Jesse James) and includes footage of the Bad Seeds performing the LP, along with interviews and Caves candid musings.
