Tom Cruise battles the ultimate evil in the new trailer for upcoming summer blockbuster The Mummy, the first chapter in Universals planned cinematic monster universe.
The latest look at the reboot blends Mission: Impossible-like stunts and action set pieces with the spine-tingling elements of the classic horror character, albeit with a spin: The mummy is now the pissed-off, power-hungry and vengeance-minded spirit of an Egyptian princess. The preview also utilizes the Rolling Stones Paint It Black.
Cruise plays both the mummys adversary and unwitting helper after awakening her spirit by accidentally discovering her tomb. Once free, the mummy unleashes havoc on London, with Cruises character the only one who can stop her.
The films synopsis says of the film, Thought safely entombed in a tomb deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess whose destiny was unjustly taken from her is awakened in our current day, bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension.
The Mummy also stars Annabelle Wallis, Sofia Boutella (as the titular villain), Jake Johnson and Russell Crowe, who portrays Dr. Henry Jekyll in the film. That character and its alter ego Mr. Hyde will likely serve as the thread in the Universal Monsters series, which will include interconnecting films involving the Invisible Man (Johnny Depp), Frankensteins monster (Javier Bardem), the Wolf Man, Van Helsing and Dracula and more.
The Mummy, one of Rolling Stones 50 Most Anticipated Films of 2017, arrives June 9th.
