Salma Hayeks Beatriz doesnt appear to suffer fools, particularly racist, obnoxious ones like John Lithgows Doug Strutt in the new trailer for the dark comedy Beatriz at Dinner.
The Miguel Arteta-directed and Mike White-written film (the pair previously teamed for 2000s Chuck & Buck) tackles several Trump-era issues, including racism, social inequality and immigration. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January.
In the clip, Strutt is a pompous billionaire real estate developer while Beatriz is an immigrant from Mexico who works as a spiritual health practitioner in Los Angeles. The pair meet at a dinner held by mutual, well-off client friends.
Their first encounter in the trailer sets the squeamish tone. Can I get another bourbon, hon? Strutt says to Beatriz, motioning his empty glass towards her. A friend explains that Beatriz is also a guest at the party, and not the help.
When Beatriz replies that she feels like she knows him, a sly retort that seemingly implies shes had to deal with people touting his condescending attitude throughout her life, Strutt laughs and says, Ever dance in Vegas?
It only gets worse during the uncomfortable dinner. As Beatriz talks about when she first came to the U.S., Strutt interrupts and asks, Did you come legally? She did. More confrontations ensue.
The film also stars Chlo Sevigny, Connie Britton, Jay Duplass and David Warshofsky.
