Watch Ominous Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer

One of the biggest sci-fi epics of the Nineties will return in 2016 as Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel of the alien invasion film that helped redefine the summer blockbuster, will hit multiplexes next summer. During Sundays slate of football games, a two-minute preview of the action flick was revealed, with the White House-destroying alien spaceships even larger and deadlier than they were in 1996.

While Will Smith wont reprise his breakout film role, the sequel will feature the return of actors Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch and Bill Pullman, who played President Thomas J. Whitmore in the original 1996 film. Whitmore is significantly more disheveled and paranoid two decades later, but he still knows how to deliver a powerhouse speech when faced with a potentially world-ending alien invasion.

Today you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression or persecution, but from annihilation, Whitmore says in the trailer, rallying the troops much like he did in the original. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday but as the day the world declared in one voice, We will not go quietly into the night. We will not vanish without a fight. Were going to live on. Were going to survive.'

Not much about the films plot is revealed, but Goldblums David Levinson says in voiceover that he spent the past two decades preparing the globe for the aliens return by harnessing the invaders own technology. Joining the cast this time around areLiam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, William Fichtner and Maika Monroe.

Independence Day: Resurgence, which also finds director Roland Emmerich and screenwriter Dean Devlin reprising their roles from the original, hits theaters on June 24th.
