The beloved sci-fi saga Starship Troopersis in line for a reboot from Columbia Pictures, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The studio tapped screenwriters Mark Swift and Damian Shannon to write the film with the hopes that it could become a new franchise. The pair previously wrote the 2003 horror mash-up Freddy vs. Jason, as well as the 2009Friday the 13thremake. Theyre currently at work on a Baywatchmovie and were reportedly tapped to write Disneys live-action Aladdinprequel,Genie.
Starship Troopersfirst arrived in 1997 and starred Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and Neil Patrick Harris. The film was based on Robert A. Heinleins novel of the same name, though director Paul Verhoeven tweaked its basic story about soldiers fighting a war against alien bugs into a satire about militarism, xenophobia, propaganda and fascism so much so, Verhoeven said the opening sequence is shot-for-shot taken from Leni Riefenstahls Triumph of the Will(Verhoeven grew up in Nazi-occupied Netherlands).
The new film, however, will not be a remake of Verhoevens film, but rather return to Heinleins novel for a new take. The reboot does not include any personnel from the 1997 movie. Neither a director nor cast have been announced.
