The One I Love

There's a twist right near the start of this stinging provocation of a comedy that makes reviewing The One I Love a land mine of potential spoilers. This much I'll tell you: Love and sex have gone out of the marriage of Sophie (Elisabeth Moss) and Ethan (Mark Duplass). Their verbal darts leave wounds. Their therapist (a wry, sly Ted Danson) sends them to a secluded retreat where they can relax, smoke weed and maybe get in touch with whatever pulled them together in the first place.

So far, so safe. Then screenwriter Justin Lader and director Charlie McDowell, in a potent feature debut, leap into a Twilight Zone where Sophie and Ethan become guardians of their own marital galaxy. If you survive that wrenching plot curve (some won't), you're in for an emotional workout. Knowing you've never seen anything like this, Moss and Duplass let it rip. You've been warned.
