Watch True Love Conquer Racism in Loving Trailer

After the Spielberg-styled sci-fi throwback Midnight Specialthis past spring, hot-streak filmmaker Jeff Nichols shifts gears to romance and social commentary with the upcomingLoving, set for release November 4th.

The handsomely mounted period piece dramatizes the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple living in Virginia during the 1950s, during which racist miscegenation laws forbade relationships between blacks and white from being recognized by the state. The Lovings flouted the laws and got a marriage license in Washington, D.C., only to be arrested upon their return to their home state. That ignited a legal battle that lasted years and led all the way to the Supreme Court, where they changed interracial marriage laws in the United States forever.

The film won critical raves when it debuted at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival back in May, earning plaudits for Ruth Neggas powerfully assured performance as Mildred and Joel Edgertons reserved but vulnerable portrayal of Richard. Both Michael Shannon and Nick Kroll appeared in welcome supporting roles as well, as a reporter documenting the Loving familys domestic tranquility, and their dedicated lawyer, respectively.

The November release date suggests that Focus intends to push for awards considerationfor director Nichols, his actors and the film itself. With a potentsocial message (that, regrettably, still has resonance today with racial tensions at an unprecedented high) and a stable of strong performances,Lovingcould be a runaway success come prestige film season.
