On Monday, nearly 15 years to the day since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon opened in U.S. theaters (where it would soon become the highest-grossing foreign film of all time), Netflix released the trailer for the sequel to Ang Lees martial-arts masterpiece. Filled with all thefisticuffs and high-flying swordplay that defined the original, thefirst glimpse at Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend promises a follow-up that will be true to the spirit of the movie that introduced the wuxia genre to so much of the Western world.
Directed by legendary fight choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping (Iron Monkey, The Matrix), The Green Legend finds Michelle Yeoh reprising her role as 18thcentury Chinas most stoic warrior, Yu Shu Lien. Adapted from the fifth and final novel of Wang Dulus Crane Iron Pentalogy (Lees film was adapted from the fourth), this new chapter forces Yeohs retired heroine to return to her old ways when a brutal warlord captures the legendary sword that was at the center of her previous adventure.
Once he has the sword, that will be the end of all of us, Yeoh ominously intones, recalling Zhang Ziyis remarkable abilities in the original film. Judging by the lush and acrobatic action in the trailer, however, the good guys are going to put up a fight.
Co-starring Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: The Green Legend will simultaneously premiere on Netflix and in IMAX theaters on February 26th.
