Watch Johnny Depp, Amber Heard Apologize for Illegal Dog Incident

Amber Heard will avoid jail time after bringing her dogs into Australia in April 2015 without officially declaring them. The actress was charged with illegally smuggling two Yorkshire terriers, Boo and Pistol, into the country, where husband Johnny Deppwas filming the fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. She faced a maximum of 10 years in prison and up to a $75,000 fine.

On Monday, Heard pleaded guilty to the less seriouscrime of providing a false immigration document when entering Australia; she was granted a one-month good behavior bond, which includes a fine of over $750 should she break any other laws during that period, The Associated Press reports.

The actress apologized for the crime in a video statement with Depp. Australia is a wonderful island with a treasure trove of unique plants, animals and people, she said, with Depp adding, It has to be protected.

Australia is free of many pests and diseases that are commonplace around the world, Heard continued. That is why Australia has to have such strong biosecurity laws.

And Australians are just as unique: both warm and direct, Depp added. When you disrespect Australian law, they will tell you firmly.

The dog controversy began last May, when the countrys Agriculture Minister, Barnaby Joyce, accused Depp of smuggling the terriers into Australia on his private jet. Bringing pets into the country requires applying for a permit and a 10-day quarantine upon arrival to prevent the spread of diseases like rabies.
