Emilia Clarke, who portrays Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, will venture from Westeros to a galaxy far, far away after being cast in Star Wars upcoming film centering on a young Han Solo.
Clarke joins a cast that includes actors Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover, in the roles of Han Solo and Lando Calrissian, as well as Star Wars favorite Chewbacca in the Phil Lord and Chris Miller-directed anthology film, due out in 2018.
StarWars.com is excited to announce that Clarke, known for her stirring portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, will join the upcoming untitled Han Solo Star Wars movie, the official Star Wars site announced Friday. Clarkes role will round out a dynamic cast of characters that Han and Chewie will encounter on their adventures.
Producers did not add what role Clarke will be playing in the Han Solo film, which focuses on the space pirates formative years and how he came into possession of the Millennium Falcon.
While Ehrenreich and Glover are taking over the roles made famous by Harrison Ford and Billy Dee Williams, respectively, its unknown whether Clarke is also portraying a younger version of someone already known in the Star Wars universe.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, actresses like Zoe Kravitz, Tessa Thompson and Naomi Scott also auditioned for a role in the Han Solo standalone film, but its unclear whether it was for the Clarke role or another character.
The first A Star Wars Story anthology film, Rogue One, arrives December 16th, with the Han Solo film to follow on May 25th, 2018; in-between, Episode VIII of the new trilogy will descend in December 2017. In September, producers announced a third Star Wars anthology film would arrive in 2020.
