The Fifth Element Returning to Theaters for 20th Anniversary

The cult classic The Fifth Element will return to theaters this May to celebrate the Bruce Willis-starring sci-fi adventures 20th anniversary.

A 4K restoration of the 1997 space epic will hit multiplexes on Sunday, May 14th and Wednesday, May 17th as part of Fathom Events 20th anniversary re-release, Entertainment Weekly reports.

In addition to the film, the 20th anniversary screenings will feature an exclusive new introduction by director Luc Besson, as well as a sneak preview of the filmmakers upcoming blockbuster Valerian and the City of the Thousand Planets, a film based on the famed French comics and, judging by the trailers, Bessons long-awaited return to galaxies far, far away.

A 20th anniversary edition of The Fifth Element, featuring the 4K restoration, will be released to home media in the summer, EW adds.

Despite opening in May 1997 to mixed reviews, The Fifth Element has become a cult favorite over the past two decades. The film stars Willis as military man-turned-cab driver Korben Dallas, who is by chance thrust into a world-saving, galaxy-spanning adventure after picking up Milla Jovovichs Leeloo, the titular Fifth Element and humanitys last hope.

Earlier this month, Fathom announced plans to bring The Graduate back to theaters for a special engagement to mark that classic comedys 40th anniversary. The film, with a new 4K restoration, will screen later this month as part of the monthly TCM Big Screen Classics series.
