Dan Aykroyd May Still Make Conventional Ghostbusters Sequel

Dan Aykroydremains hopeful for a more conventional Ghostbusters sequel, though he expressed his excitement and support for the upcoming all-female franchise rebootin a new interview on the SiriusXM show, Unmasked With Ron Bennington.

Aykroyd noted that since the new movie which stars Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Kristen Wiig, and will be directed by Bridesmaids Paul Feig takes place in a completely different universe than the original films, its possible his third Ghostbusters installment could be made in the future.

[T]heres three drafts of the old concept that exists, Aykroyd said. And were going to be able to salvage some of it and use it some day. Lets get this one made and that will reinvigorate the franchise, and then well go on to maybe doing a more conventional third sequel as we were planning and another idea I have for it.

Aykroyd did, however, have plenty of praise for Feig and Katie Dippolds new script, which he said hes contributing to as well. I can tell you, as the originator, Im very happy with what hes done, Aykroyd said. Its very tasteful. And it needed a reworking. The thing needed a new engine. You know? It needed new exhaust. It needed new steering.

As for the films all-star XX-chromosome cast, Aykroyd was equally excited, especially given that Ive got three daughters, Im all for female empowerment. While henoted the charactersin Feigs script stand on their own, Aykroydadded: Now of course, hes got masters playing the roles for him, so this is going to really work in our favor for the third movie.

The Ghostbusters reboot will begin filming this summer; it is scheduled to open on July 22nd, 2016.
