Trent Reznor Previews Ominous Gone Girl Soundtrack

David Finchers film adaptation of the novel Gone Girl doesnt hit theaters for another two weeks, but Trent Reznor has offered fans an early chance to immerse themselves in its disturbing sonic landscape. The Nine Inch Nailsfrontman, who composed the soundtrack with Atticus Ross, kicked the weekend off by posting a preview of the soundtrack on the NIN website.

The selection opens with an ominous chiming tone before a clicking beat kicks in and layers of electronic sounds begin to pile up. Somewhere in the middle, the static retreats, leaving an eerie synth-generated woodwind melody to take over before its overwhelmed again by the other sounds.

Reznor, who previously collaborated with Ross and Fincher on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and the Oscar-winning original score for The Social Network, recently spoke about the direction that Fincher gavethe two composers for the Gone Girl soundtrack. He said, Think about the really terrible music you hear in massage parlors,' Reznor told The Wall Street Journal. The way that it artificially tries to make you feel like everythings OK. And then imagine that sound starting to curdle and unravel. Reznor also noted that he attempted to evoke the feeling of walls closing in on the main character. (Fincher later corrected this to a spa, not a massage parlor.)
