Pixars next film, Inside Out, will give viewers a look at something tumultuous, confusing and unpredictable: the mind of an 11-year-old girl. As the teaser above shows, director Pete Docters film operates on the idea that children are guided more by emotion and less by rationality. Taking this to a cute and colorful extreme, the filmgives voices and faces to protagonist Rileys emotions, which are in turmoil after a recent move to San Francisco.
Her emotions operate out of Headquartersa control center in Rileys mind. Theres Joy, played by Amy Poehler; Fear, by Bill Hader; Anger, by Lewis Black; Disgust, by Mindy Kaling; and Sadness, by Phyllis Smith. Joy usually has full control over Rileys mind, but navigating a new school and house have left the other emotions unrestrained and battling for a greater say in her decisions.
The trailer opens by showing the many tearjerking and LOL-inducing emotions that have driven Pixar films throughout the years, but then transitions into a bright and dramatic interpretation of a childs mind. Small, clear orbs holding Rileys memories are displayed on organized racks, where the sparkling and pixie-inspired Joy can pick them up and pass them over to bright red and box-shaped Anger or Sadness. (The latter, unsurprisingly, sports a monotonous shade of blue and wears a continuously drooping face.)
The unique coming-of-age film hits theaters June 19th.
