Melissa McCarthy Explains Very Confusing Ghostbusters Trailer

Melissa McCarthy admitted the first trailer for the female-fronted Ghostbusters was very confusing on The Johnjay and Rich Showafter the firstclipreceivedenough thumbs-down votes on YouTube to place it among the 100 mostdislikedvideos.

McCarthy explained that while the clip and the slightly different second trailer beginswith a30 years ago title card, the new movie is not dependent on the 1984 original and 1989 sequel.

Its a reboot, not a remake, the actress said. I know its weird that they say 30 years ago, but in this movie its like the first one didnt happen. Its that great story but told totally differently. But its the same thing of four unlikely heroes: its in New York City [and] ghosts are taking over.

McCarthy said she didnt quite get the 30 years later card herself and cracked. Believe me, the question was asked. I was like, I think thats very confusing. But then everyone said, We dont care what you think.'

Since it arrived at the beginning of March, the Ghostbusterstrailer has accumulated over 30 million views and approximately 650,000 dislikes (as of this publishing). While there is significant crossover between videos that fall on YouTubes most disliked videosand most viewedvideos, the Ghostbusters clip has an abnormally high number of dislikes to views. Its ratio comes out to about 46:1, while per the film site ScreenCrush Justin Biebers Baby(the least liked video of all time) has 6 million thumbs downs to 1.36 billion views for a ratio of 226:1, while Psys Gangnam Style(fourth least liked) has 1.5 million dislikes to 2.5 billion viewsfor a ratio of 1,666:1 (though it should also be noted that those videos have been on the YouTubefor six and four years, respectively, compared to one month forGhostbusters).

Director Paul Feig implied the votes against the Ghostbusterstrailer were part of a concerted effort perhaps with misogynistic undertones in an interview with The Guardian, saying: The haters on our trailer were very proud of the fact they had racked up 400,000 [currently 600,000] dislikes on YouTube versus 200,000 likes. But [given the number of views] thats not a majority by anybody standards. Some of it is that people dont want an old property touched Im sympathetic to that. But the ones who are hating it because its about women? Thats just a non-starter.

Along with McCarthy, the newGhostbusters stars Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. It opens July 15th.
