Martin Scorseseis known for collaborating with a tight-knit group of actors throughout his career: In his legendary run in the Seventies and Eighties, he worked frequently with Robert De Niro; in recent years, hes found acclaim directing Leonardo DiCaprio. But all three movie icons have never worked together on the same project until now, under bizarre circumstances. Scorsese directed both actors and Brad Pitt inThe Audition, a short film created to promote two new Asian casinos (Studio City in Macau, China and City of Dreams in Manila, Philippines).
The short was written by Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street) and produced by Brett Ratner and based on the trailer, it will be far more entertaining than one might expect from a big-budget ad campaign. The clip finds De Niro and DiCaprio arriving at the Macau casino, where awkwardness and tension grow high as the acclaimed actors (playing themselves) realize theyre auditioning for the same role in a Scorsese film.May the best man win, De Niro tells his rival. No, I dont even want to say it like that. Let the best person for the part be the person whos in the part.
Though a press release states that Pitt will also appear in the short, hes limited to a still-image cameo in the trailer.According to an unnamed insider (via Page Six), the three actors each took home $13 million for the two-day shoot, while the overall budget was reportedly $70 million. (A spokesman for Melco Crown claimed that the financial figures were wrong and have not been publicly disclosed.)
