WarGames to Become Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Reboot

The 1983 hacker filmWarGames will soon be rebooted as an interactive video with new characters and plots, allowing viewers to decide where the action will go. Variety reports that the digital remake will come out early next year.

The original movie took place during the Cold War and revolved around a young hacker, played by Matthew Broderick, who stumbles into the U.S. governments War Operation Plan Response supercomputer, which calculated the probability of nuclear winter. Thinking its a game, he runs a simulation and ostensibly threatens the world with a doomsday countdown to a Third World War. The movie also starred Dabney Coleman, John Wood and Ally Sheedy, among others, and was nominated for three Oscars, including Best Screenplay.

MGM owns the rights to the film and is teaming with interactive-video company Interlude, which made 2013s impressive Like a Rolling Stone clip for Bob Dylan and this years clip for Led Zeppelins Trampled Under Foot, to create the remake. The companies have not yet elaborated on how they will adapt the plot, which they say will be a modernized version of the original.

WarGames is the perfect MGM title for this innovative technology, MGM Television Group and Digital President Roma Khanna said, according to Variety. It allows us to engage the audience in the fundamental questions of, What would you do?'

Interludes CEO, Yoni Bloch, described the interactive endeavor as a test to see how people react to the technology; they havent associated expected revenue to the project. The company, which was founded in 2010 and is still best known for its music videos, looks at the project as an opportunity to expand into full-length movies.
