Next summer will see the release of Bryan Singers fourth X-Men movie, and judging by the trailer, it appears to be the directors darkest and most star-studded contribution to the constantly evolving superhero franchise. Arriving two years after Days of Future Past, the latest adventures of the mutant superheroes X-Men: Apocalypse will introduce its villainous title character to the series.
I saw the end of the world, a frightened Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) tells Charles Xavier (James McAvoy). I could feel all this death. Our first glimpse at the new movie quickly illustrates the cause for her premonition, as historys very first mutant Apocalypse steps out of the shadows with all the menace that his name implies. You are all my children, the square-jawed purple ancient whispers in the unmistakable voice of actor Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis), and youre lost because you follow blind leaders. But Im here now.
As Magneto, Mystique, Quicksilver, and the rest of the series familiar faces show up for battle, the skies darken, cities begin to implode, and the supervillain threatens to take over the world by controlling the X-Men. Former enemy-turned-comrade Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) concisely sums up the computer-generated carnage that comes next: This is war.
In addition to returning cast members like McAvoy, Lawrence, and Michael Fassbender, X-Men: Apocalypse also co-stars Tye Sheridan as a young Cyclops and Lana Condor as Jubilee (a fan favorite from the animated X-Men TV series). The film hits theaters on May 27th, 2016.
