Fifteen years after Denzel Washington won an Academy Award for playing a morally corrupt detective in Training Day, that films director Antoine Fuqua will helm a reboot of the Los Angeles police drama, only this time for television. CBS has ordered a pilot for the Training Day reboot, which takes place 15 years after the action of the film, with Fuqua on board to direct the episode.
However, as opposed to the original film where Washingtons Alonzo Harris attempted to corrupt straight-laced officer Jake Hoyt, played by Ethan Hawke the series will find an idealistic young African-American police officer who is appointed to an elite squad of the LAPD where he is partnered with a seasoned, morally ambiguous Caucasian detective, The Hollywood Reporter writes.
Gangster Squad screenwriter Will Beall, a former Los Angeles Police Department homicide detective, will write the Training Day pilot; Beall was also previously working on the Lethal Weapon TV reboot before that project landed in the hands of Chuck writer Matt Miller. Jerry Bruckheimer will be among the reboots producers.
Transforming cinematic properties into television shows has become a steady trend in Hollywood, with Training Day joining a list of films like Taken,The Exorcist, Lethal Weapon, Rush Hour, Behind Enemy Lines, Friday the 13th and The Notebookthat are currently beingdeveloped for the small screen.
These reboots have seen varying success if and when they do come to television: While Fargo is now an award-winning and critically acclaimed anthology series on FX, Foxs Minority Report remake lasted just 10 episodes before its series order was reduced. Other recent reboots include MTVs Scream and CBS Limitless.
