Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from husband and long-term partner Brad Pitt, the Associated Press reports. The pair married in 2014 and have six children together.
Jolie reportedly filed legal documents on Monday citing irreconcilable differences. She has asked for sole physical custody of their children with no spousal support. This decision was made for the health of the family, attorney Robert Offer said in a statement to Reuters. She will not be commenting and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time.
I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well being of our kids, Pitt told People in a statement. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time.
Pitt and Jolie have been in a romantic relationship for at least a decade. Speculation that the pair were together began in 2004 while they filmed the box office smash Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a film where they played married assassins. At the time of filming, Pitt was still married to Jennifer Aniston. Both he and Jolie have denied that infidelity occurred, though Pitt has said he fell in love with Jolie while filming the movie.
Though its unclear when they officially first started dating, the pair adopted Jolies second child their first together in 2005. Jolie became the adoptive mother of the Ethiopia-born Zahara in July of that year and Pitt became the adoptive father in early 2006. In May 2006, they became biological parents for the first time to child Shiloh. They have since adopted one more son and conceived twins.
Just last year, the pair starred alongside each other in the romantic drama By the Sea, which was also written and directed by Jolie. They played a long-married couple who visit a French hotel to patch up their marriage.
