Aliens return to Earth to finish some unfinished civilization-erasing business in Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the 1996 blockbuster film. After previous previews have teasedthe films 20-years-later plot and immense destruction, the latest trailer for the upcoming film provides some more background into whats happened in the two decades since the aliens first attacked.
In the sequel, actress Maika Monroe plays the daughter of Bill Pullmans former President Whitmore, while Liam Hemsworth plays her love interest and fellow pilot Jake Morrison. The trailer also devotes plenty of screen time to the aliens revised method of annihilation: Instead of beaming a pulverizing beam of light into densely populated areas, they utilize anti-gravity technology to literally uproot cities and then drop them into certain doom.
All the destruction doesnt come without some wit: As the aliens engage in a skyline-devouring romp through London, Jeff Goldblum quips, They like to get the landmarks, a nod to the extraterrestrials targeting places like the White House and the Empire State Building in the original. In addition to Pullman and Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, Brett Spiner and Judd Hirsch also reprise their roles from the original. Although Will Smith doesnt appear in the sequel, his presence is felt in the form of Jessie Ushers Dylan Dubrow-Hiller, the stepson of Smiths Steven Hiller.
Its Fourth of July; lets show them some fireworks, Dubrow-Hiller tells his co-pilot during one battle. Independence Day: Resurgence invades theaters June 24th.
In an odd piece of synergy, today Google Play is offeringHD digital downloads of the original, planet-ravaging Independence Day for 99 cents, with Foxs netproceeds going toward Earth Day charities.
