Documentaries about JonBenet Ramsey, Hulk Hogan, ISIS and the protests in Ferguson, Missouri lead 2017s lineup at the Sundance Film Festival, taking place in and around Park City, Utah from January 19th through 29th.
On the heels of an avalanche of TV specials this year dedicated to the unsolved 1996 murder, Casting JonBenet will focus on the impact the Ramsey murder had on the girls community.
Other notable documentaries include Nobody Speak: Hulk Hogan, Gawker and Trials of a Free Press, a film about the First Amendment court case between the wrestler and the popular siteandWhose Streets?, a look at the aftermath of the Michael Brown killingin Ferguson.
This years festival will also include a New Climate program focused on environmentally minded films like Chasing Coral (about the disappearing coral reefs), Trophy (about big game hunting and conservation) and Water & Power: A California Heist,a documentary on the states water barons.
My own engagement on climate change began more than 40 years ago, and the urgency I felt then has only grown stronger given its very real and increasingly severe consequences, Sundance founder Robert Redford said in a statement. If were going to avoid the worst-case scenario, then we must act boldly and immediately, even in the face of indifference, apathy and opposition.
Among the 16 feature films up for the esteemed U.S. Dramatic Competition are Brigsby Bear, co-written by Saturday Night Lives Kyle Mooney andLife in Pieces star Zoe Lister-Jones Band Aid.
A few musicians also pop up in this years Sundance cast as Beastie Boys Adam Ad-Rock Horovitz co-stars in Alex Ross Perrys Golden Exits and the Jesus Lizards David Yow appears in I Dont Feel at Home in This World Anymore. Roxanne Roxanne, a biopic about Eighties hip-hop star Roxanne Shante, is also among the films in competition.
