One of the biggest surprises to come out of San Diegos Comic-Con so far is the revelation that a sequel toThe Blair Witch Project, the horror movie that spawned an entire found-footage genre, will arrive in theaters in September.
Titled simply Blair Witch, the film takes place in present day, with the brother of Heather, the girl who disappeared in the 1999 original, setting forth into the Black Hills Forest of Maryland in search of his sister, The Playlist reports.
If it seems like the Blair Witch sequel has been conjured up out of nowhere, thats because the latest project was filmed in secret: Director Adam Wingard, who previously helmed Youre Next and The Guest, made the film under the working title The Woods, similar to how 10 Cloverfield Lane was produced under the title The Cellar to avoid spoiling its connection to Cloverfield. (Posters for The Woods were even made.) It wasnt until Comic-Con that The Woods/Blair Witch ruse was revealed.
Blair Witch, the first film in the series since the maligned Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, opens September 16th.
