On the strength of a record-breaking Christmas, Star Wars: The Force Awakensbarreled past $1 billion at the worldwide box office in historic fashion, needing just 12 days to achieve the feat. By comparison, Avatar needed 19 days to cross the $1 billion mark, while Jurassic World required 13 days this summer.
In its second weekend in multiplexes, The Force Awakens generated another $153.5 million worth of domestic ticket sales. When added to last weekends record haulas well as the worldwide box office, the films total revenue is approximately $1.1 billion, Variety reports.
On December 25th alone, The Force Awakens made Christmas history with $49.3 million at the box office, more than doubling the $24.6 million set by the previous Christmas day record holder, 2009s Sherlock Holmes, The Hollywood Reporter writes.
According to Deadline, of The Force Awakens billion-dollar bounty, $544 million came from the domestic box office and $546 million from international receipts; the film wont open in China, the worlds second largest movie-going market, until January 9th.
The Force Awakens was the catalyst in what was a record-smashing Christmas weekend at the domestic box office as moviegoers combined for a $269.8 million. After Star Wars, the comedy Daddys Home led the charge with $38 million, followed by overperforming films like Joy, the Point Break remake, Concussion and, in its second weekend, Sisters.
