Disney announced that Lucasfilm will pump out a new anthology film set in George Lucas galaxy far, far away by 2020, according to chief executive Bob Iger.Deadline reports that at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference, Iger said the scheduled film would form a trilogy with this Decembers Rogue One and the upcoming Han Solo spinoff film starring Alden Ehrenreich, all under the A Star Wars Story banner.
Iger also said he does not expect the box-office receipts from Rogue One to hit the same highs that The Force Awakens reached last winter. Though Iger reassured that the level of interest in [Rogue One] is as high as it was for Force Awakens. He added, we love what weve seen.
Adding the anthology to the Star Wars schedule means that itll be some time before any of us have to live in a lightsaber-less world. The Gareth Edwards-directedRogue One arrives in December and Rian Johnsons to-be-titled Episode VIII will open in 2017. 2018 is reserved for Phil Lord and Christopher Millers Han Solo project and 2019 belongs to Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrows Episode IX.
Iger has stated that hes already begun to speak with Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy about plans for 2021 and beyond. (Deadlines report also mentions that Iger has taken similar meetings with higher-ups at Marvel Studios to prepare for the next decade.)
