Radioheadguitarist Jonny Greenwood, Israeli composer Shye Ben Tzur and filmmaker Paul Thomas Andersontrekked to northwest India to record with the Rajasthan Express, a collaboration that was documented in the film Junun. Now, Nonesuch Records have unveiledan outtake from the documentary withthe intimate, magical session that resulted in the track Hu, which features on the Junun album (via Pitchfork).
Sitting in a large circle and illuminated only by desk lights, Andersons camera swirls around freely to capture each musical component of the joyous Hu, from an extensive percussion section that boasts a trio of men handclapping to a trumpeter. Slightly outside the circle, Greenwood sits on a couch with a guitar on his lap, adding to the interlocking rhythm of Hu. Ben Tzur himself delivers the devotional hymn into the microphone; the composer is fluent in both Hindi and Urdu. As the song winds to its conclusion, Ben Tzur and his guitar perform unaccompanied for the final minute.
The film and album for Junun, which translates to madness of love, are both available to purchase via iTunes.
