Kurt Cobain Decides Nirvana Band Name in Montage of Heck Clip

Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck will premiere on HBO on May 4th, but with the Brett Morgen-directed documentary set to embark on its limited theatrical runApril 10th, the Guardianhas offered up a new clip from the critically acclaimedfilm. In theminute-long snippet, Morgen runs through all the different band names Cobain toyed around with before settling on Nirvana.

While previous Montage of Heck trailers featured the heartbreaking never-before-seen home moviesfrom Cobains own archives, the latest clip spotlights the new animation that will help bring the documentary to life, much of it inspired by the scribbling and artwork from Cobains journals.

Some of the monikers Fecal Matter, Skid Row (before Sebastian Bachs hair metal act became popular), Bliss and Erectum were well known among Nirvana fans, while others like the Mandibles, Labido, Boy in Heat and Man Bug were more obscure. (The animation does skip a few, including Ted Ed Fred and Pen Cap Chew.) The brief clip also focuses in on a list Cobain made detailing some of his favorite songs, which includes tracks by Skindiver, Big Black, Dead Boys, the Wipers Greg Sage and, most surprisingly, the Bangles.

The Montage of Heck HBO premiere will also be preceded by a companion bookcontaining a mixture of animation stills, rare photography and other treasures from Kurt Cobains personal archive. Morgen also promised that the Montage of Heck soundtrack would feature a mind-blowing 12-minute acoustic Cobain unheard track, though no details of the song have been released.
