Watch Two Crews Battle on the Dance Floor in Fast-Paced Style Wars Outtake

Style Wars, the 1983 documentary account of New Yorkstrain-tagging graffiti scene, includes footage of spray-painted subway cars, a soundtrack full of early hip-hop and Mayor Ed Koch presenting his new anti-vandalism ad campaign, but one of the films most memorable scenes occurs at a dance battle between the Dynamic Rockers and the Rock Steady Crew.

Tomorrow, just over 30 years after its release, the film is being reissued on Blu-ray and packaged with 40 minutes of outtakes and a 25-minute behind-the-scenes look at the original editing process. Above, you can watch a portion of those outtakes:an extended version of that phenomenal dance battle. For two minutes, we see the two crews go back and forth, and at the end, they reflect upon the preceding events.

About 10 years ago, [director] Tony Silver and I had a dream to make an HD version of Style Wars from the original 16 mm negative, producer Henry Chalfant tells Rolling Stone. Sadly, the negative had deteriorated over the years and required extensive restoration. But with the help of generous fans of the film we have finally achieved our dream; weve been able to make a 2k transfer and carry out the restoration digitally.

The result can be pre-ordered here.
