See Brian Wilsons Struggle in Love & Mercy Trailer

The first trailer for the Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy shows the Beach Boys singer-songwriter struggling to craft the greatest album ever made and clashing with his bandmates. In the film, Paul Dano plays Wilson in his younger years, while John Cusack portrays the present-day Beach Boy. That portion of the one-minute preview shows the older Wilson cavorting with his eventual wife, Melinda Ledbetter (played by Elizabeth Banks), who encourages him to rediscover himself.

The film was directed by Bill Pohlad (a producer on 12 Years a Slave and Wild) and was written by Michael A. Lerner and Oren Moverman, the latter of whom previously co-wrote the Bob Dylan movie Im Not There. It also features Paul Giamatti as Dr. Eugene Landy, a psychiatrist who had a tumultuous relationship with Wilson.

I still cant believe how cool it is that my life will be portrayed on the big screen, and to have Bill Pohlad as the captain of the Sloop John B is amazing, Wilson said of the film in 2013. It just makes me feel so humble. I cant wait to see it with a full tub of buttered popcorn.

The singer-songwriter also said at the time that he was thrilled that Dano would be portraying him. Personally, I hope they feel that we captured even the tiniest bit of the energy that he has, Dano told Rolling Stone about the film last year. I mean, fans know his story. They undoubtedly have a good idea of what hes gone through in his life, how he suffered and was exploited, how he finally found peace in his life. I hope the movie leaves them with a sense of compassion.

Love & Mercy hits theaters on June 5th.
