The creepy story of the Slender Man stabbing unfolds in the trailer for HBOs new documentary about the meme that inspired two Wisconsin pre-teens to try and murder their classmate.
The Beware the Slender Man clip opens with a Blair Witch-style sequence. A camera flits around in a dark wooded area and a whispery voice recites a poem about the Slender Man, whose lanky, faceless body finally appears at the end of the sequence. The character pops up throughout the trailer, which explores how two 12-year-olds became so obsessed with the meme that they believed the only way to prove his existence was to commit murder. The trailer incorporates footage from the interviews suspects Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier did with investigators, as well as talking-head musings on the power of fictional ghouls, especially for children.
In 2014, Weier and Geyser brought their classmate, then-11-year-old Payton Leutner, out to the woods and stabbed her. Leutner, however, survived the attack by crawling to a nearby bike path. Later that year, Geyser was diagnosed with early onset schizophrenia, however in July 2016 a Wisconsin Appeals Court ruled that both she and Weier (now 14) would be tried as adults. The trial is still ongoing.
Beware the Slender Mandebuted earlier this year at South by Southwest. It will air on HBO January 23rd, 2017.
