A film adaptationofHamiltonmastermindLin-Manuel Mirandas debutmusical, In the Heights, has been revived by the Weinstein Company, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Universal was developing anIn the Heights movie with screenwriter Marc Klein (Serendipity) and director Kenny Ortega, but dropped the project in 2011over casting difficulties and its proposed$37 million budget.The Weinstein Company will likely bring on a new director and writer, and whileMiranda will beheavily involved in the film, its unclear whether he will reprise his role as the shows main character, Usnavi.
Set in the titular Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, In the Heights featured a large ensemble cast that centered around Usnavi, a bodega owner who grapples with closing his shop and returning to his native Dominican Republic after his grandmother wins the lottery.
Miranda began writing the music and lyrics for In the Heights while still in college, and later teamed with Quiara Alegra Hudes, who wrote the book. The show garnered numerous accolades during an off-Broadway run and debuted on Broadway in 2008, eventually winningfour Tonys including Best Musical. It continues to tour the world.
News of the In the Heightsmovierevival comes as MirandasHamilton continues its Broadway reign. The musical debuted last February, has brought in millions at the box office and garnered a record-setting 16 Tony nominations. The show has also kickstarted Mirandas film career, with the actor set toplay Jack in Disneys Mary Poppins Returns, which will arrivein 2018.
The 2016 Tony Awards nominations were announced and Lin-Manuel Mirandas Hamilton got a record-breaking 16 nominations.
